A Local Song (continued)
“High in mid air it is standing”
(continued from previous page)South side of Slieve Bawn,
Twas there we dug the gravel
For the alley of Sheeaun.
Twas there we dug the gravel
To cement St Mary's bell,
That peals along Roscommon
As history can tell.
And the Canon blessed the alley,
With a bright and heavenly smile.
And to quarrel are its suburbs,
Would his sacred blessing smile.
V
On a glorious harvest evening,
When our hard day's work is done
All are off for the alley,
To have some Gaelic fun.
And the handball is kept playing,
It is soon left where it fell.
And all hats are off in praying,
At the sound of Mary's bell. This song was composed by William Nerney the time the ball-alley was built in Sheeaun.
