- The local fairs
At present, fairs are held in the towns of Roscommon, Longford and Lanesborro. In former times, buyers came to the farmer's house and bought whatever cattle the farmers had to sell. This is still done. Long ago, a fair was held in Ballinafad in a big field called the "Turlough."
At this fair, races were held and also matchmaking was carried on. The fair lasted a week, and during that time, faction fights took place. Most of the fights were between different political parties. About fifty years ago, the fair of Ballinafad was transferred to Strokestown where it is held on the twenty-(continues on next page)- Collector
