- The smith makes ploughs, and harrows, and mends them. He does not make spades, shovels, pikes, axes, but he used to make them about thirty years ago. Shoeing wheels is done in the open air and sometimes horses are shod in the open air. They shoe wheels by a river or stream, and horses outside the door of their forge. I never heard any names in connection with forge work done in the open air or with the forge water or with the sparks that fly fly from the red iron. I never heard of any privileges smiths had. People give them gifts sometimes - such as potatoes, butter, and eggs. Smiths are like ordinary men but some of them are strong. I never(continues on next page)
