- (continued from previous page)dreamt for three nights that a great quantity of gold lay hidden under the stone so on the third night he set out to unearth the stone. He did not believe in all this foolish nonsense about it being guarded he said to himself as he shed across the field with a spade and axe over his shoulder. He had just begun to cut the bush when a splinter from the stroke of his axe hit him and caused him that loss of an eye. He returned home in a fainting condition and never again tried to cut the bush. Nowadays the young folk shudder when they are told round a bright fireside the story of the man who tried to unearth the treasure and they marvel at the courage of the man who pitted his powers against those of the super-natural world.
