    to their rest, a cross was raised up at Clonmacnoise to commemorate the simple act which led to the founding of so great a place of learning and virtue. The figures of the two men are upon a cross, and between them an upright pole is placed, and to this day the cross stands, a silent witness of a well-known legend that has stayed there, on the lonely Shannon banks for a thousand years and more.
