- My Home District
The name of my townland is Newtown. It is in the parish of St Johns. There are ten families in it and forty two people. There are four or five houses in ruins and the people that lived in them are dead. There is a song composed about Johnsport Hill which is in this parish. It was composed by a poet who lived in Carnamadda. His name was Patrick J Feeney.
People left this place long ago and went to America. The most common name in this place is O Grady.
The land in this place is rich and good. There is no bog and the land is not hilly. This parish is beside the River Shannon, and there is a very nice scenery in it. There is a big Wood in this place, it is called St Johns Wood, there are twohundred acres in it as there is no bog, the wood is split up into parts and is used by the people as firestuff.
