  1. The customs and habits of the people of Clonown have changed considerably in the past seventy years.
    Education has wrought a wonderful change on the people especially in their customs and habits. Seventy years ago the people of Clonown were very backward compared with the people of the district nowadays. They got very little opportunity to educate themselves, and moreover they were ground down by landlordism. Bad laws and lawgivers added to their poverty.
    The dwelling houses on a large scale were built of stone with thatched roofs, while poorer inhabitants had only mud-wall houses. The houses were also very small, they only comprised two or three small rooms. In each room was a very small window, because at that time a tax was levied on each
