  1. There is an account of four schools known as Hedge Schools in this district about seventy or eighty years ago. There was one in Clongowna, one in Newtown, another in Rooskey and a fourth in Ballymullalin.
The Clongowna school was taught by a man named Larry Higgins, and the others by Neddy Kelly.
The Newtown school was held in an out house. My mother attended this school, and remembered seeing the master taking down the door and placing it on four stones to serve as a desk for the pupils.
Those old schoolmasters taught very well, and were particular about manners, and showing respect to the poor and aged.
