- The day before the feast of St Martin, which falls on 11th Nov. it was customary formerly to kill a cock and sprinkle the blood in the four corners of the house. This was supposed to keep sickness away from the family.
- It is the custom still, locally, to kill the Michaelmas goose in honour of St Michael, whose feast day occurs in September.
