He went into shop "see if he would get anything to eat there" so he was not long inside in the shop when a man appeared to him and asked him funny questions. Jack said to the man then, that he would bet a pound with him that he would not change himself into a rat. He had not the words, said out of his mouth when the man changed into a rat, and after a while Jack took the rat and put him into a case he had with. Then he walked out of the shop, and went along a road that led to a mill. Jack told the man of the mill that he would bet a pound with him that he would not break the case in the mill.
