- It is surprising to hear people of over sixty years speak of the changes that have taken place in the habits and customs of the peasantry of Ireland for the past fifty years particularly as regards diet. It is about three weeks since I heard another old man and my father conversing about what they got to eat when they were young and what they saw others eating. In the morning the men used be out working in the fields at six o clock in Summer time and at day-dawn in Winter time for two or three hours when they, with all the household, would be seated down to a breakfast of potatoes and skimmed milk and the potatoes would not be the best sometimes and the milk was little better than separated milk. Work would be carried on until dinner time and the same meal would be supplied again potatoes and skimmed milk. People considered themselves very happy if they could(continues on next page)
