    It was generally a shrivelled - up woman’s hand, and as a charm it was supposed to have great potency.
    Spilling milk is considered very unlucky, but the flick of a cows tail in one’s face while milking is supposed to be a sign of money coming.
    If milk is borrowed it should be paid for in kind, not in money.
    And the luckiest present anyone can get is butter, and an old couplet says
    ‘’Get the gold of butter free’’
    ‘’Happy through your life you’ll be’’
