- Long ago the candles were made at home from tallow. When they used to kill a cow the fat used to be heated until it was melted. The woman of the house used to put a ladder across the house and about a hundred sticks used to be put across the ladder. The tallow used to be put into a crock when it was melted. A piece of wick used to be doubled and put on each stick. Then she used to begin at one end, and take each stick that a piece of wick was on, and dip in into the tallow. When she used to have the ladder finished she used to go back to the first again, and so on until the candle was thick enough. The candles used to be hung up in bundles until they were(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
