- A Shipwreck
At one time there traded between the British Isles and other countries a ship called the Memphis.
The Memphis left Montreal one fine summer's day with a cargo of cattle, butter, bacon, and eggs. She was bound for Liverpool. On the south coast of Cork she ran into a fog which sent her to her doom. She was wrecked on the rugged rocks of Dunlough Bay. All the crew except the captain were drowned. He was saved by getting on a bullock's back which swam with him safely to the shore.
For a long time afterwards the shores around here were strewn with the wreckage of the Memphis.
