  1. There is no one in this locality who remembers the Big Snow, but my father has plenty of stories about it which he got from his father.
    The snow began to fall on the 14th of February 1854 and it continued for several days. Remains of it were to be seen between the hills until the following July.
    On the morning of the 16th of February, the people had to make tunnels through the snow to reach the stables and the hay-barn and the stalls.
    The snow was at least 40 feet high in our yard. Grandfather said it was one level between Owen Hill and Pookeen Hill.
