This was a custom in Ireland long ago, on Christmas Day.

This was a custom in Ireland long ago, on Christmas Day. The people used to have a fish dinner, and have their dinner late at night. Long ago the people used to spend their money in a foolish manner, and the fairies cast a spell upon them, and since that people have not enough money to buy turkeys or geese, and they eat fish instead.
