shoemaker in the this district. In the olden times there were about four shoemakers in this district. It is not tradition for him to be a shoemaker because his father was a farmer and his father again a farmer. The reason why there are not more shoemakers in the district is that there was much more people in the district long ago than there are nowadays.
In olden times the people wore clogs. The shoemaker made the clogs. There are wooden soles on them and they are very heavy. Some of the people in the district wear them yet. In the olden times when the people were going to town they carried their shoes under their arms and when they were drawing near the town they put them on. It is said if the water left after washing the feet was left in the house the fairies would visit it.
