- Farming long ago was much different from the farming nowadays, people used to plough with a timber plough, they had no machines for cutting the corn only scythes, they would cut the hay also with scythes, the threshing machines they would put a big stick in the ground and beat the shaves off of it until the grains were all after falling out of it, then they would get a winnowing machine and separate the oats from the chaff.
