- On the western side of the parish stands the ruined Franciscan Abbey of Kilcrea.Broghill, Commander of the English Forces in Munster during the Cromwellian invasions, closed it down and captured some of the monks. Two were hanged on the trees in front of the Abbey gates, and one was killed attempting to cross the river Bride close by. The others escaped and retreated towards Clashanafrin. The trees, upon which the monks were hung, never again put forth a leaf. They decayed but the roots are still local landmarks. Following the banishment of the monks the Abbey was occupied by a Cromwellian(continues on next page)
