build in a wall where a brick is missing or in a coil of rope hanging on a peg in a tool shed. The nest is made of moss and leaves. The yellowhammer's nest is concealed in a hedge bank by the roadside or similar locality. The eggs are beautifully marked with streaks and fine hair like lines of dark brown on a purplish-white ground. The greenlinnet and chaffinch build their nests cleverly being made to look very much like the branch on which it is constructed.
Occasionally the nests are decorated with small pieces of paper placed round the outside. The chaffinch's is one of the most beautiful nests to be seen, it is called "a paragon of perfection". It is small compact and cup-shaped, constructed of moss lichens and wool and lined by hair, feathers or down. The nests of the jackdaw, hawk and crow are all situated on tree tops made of mud, moss and feathers. The sparrow and the wagtail usually build in house eaves.
