    Hardly a day passed that did not bring some new misfortune until more than half the cattle had died.
    On the very day that the new house was completed the young woman of the house was stricken with illness. Daily she grew thinner and paler, and weaker. On the ninth day of her illness she fell into a trance-like sleep from which it seemed she could never again awaken.
    The poor husband who was overwhelmed with grief looked little better than his wife. He had not slept a wink since she had become sick. Night after night he sat at her bedside hoping she would speak to him again before she died.
