    In May all the earth is shovelled up on the ridge, and the garden is sprayed on the 24th of June and again on the 13th of July.
    Drills: The ground from which the corn has been removed is ploughed in Autumn. Then in spring it is cross ploughed and harrowed and rolled. Drills are then opened with a double-boarded plough. Manure is then carted out and spread on the furrows.
    A single row of seed is then laid on each furrow and the drills are again closed. They are allowed to remain in this position until the stalks appear. They are then hoed down with a hand hoe, and the surface raised up with the plough.
