I love thee like my very soul,
But I to none shall tell,
I wish that no one should it know,
Please keep secret well;
Keep up your heart, the day's not far
When you and I shall be
Like brothers, two, with sword in hand,
Our land oppressed to free.

It grieves my heart to see you pine
Within these prison walls,
Bereft of friends and all that's dear,
Coerced by tyrant laws;
Alas! I can do nought for thee,
My sympathy's in vain;
But soon, thank God, the day will come
When free you'll be again.

Accursed be the vile Saxon laws,
Which long our land oppressed,
And in the death of martyrdom
