- There was a hedge-school in Dan Ryan's barn in the town of Knockavilling. The master was named John Cronin. He was a stranger in the District.
He used to lodge in the farmers houses. He was paid five shillings a quarter.
There was no Irish spoken in that school by the master or pupils. There were no books used, only slates pencils and pens made, of quills of geese and hens
Each class sat on boxes. There was no blackboard. The master remained about three months.- Collector
