  1. There are six forges in the parish. One is situated at Gooseberry Hill, one at Taur and four in the town. The smith who owns the forge at Gooseberry Hill is named John O Callaghan. He is a very good smith and a clever man about machinery. He has invented a new patent finger - bar for mowing machines, and the farmers who have used it, praise it highly. The forge at Taur is owned by Con Fitzpatrick, who, is known locally as "Mister".
    The four forges in the town are owned by Brennans, Allens, Fitzpatricks and Fordes. Brennans situated at Main Street, Allens at Church Street, Fitzpatrick at West end and Fordes at Charleville Line.
    Brennans and Allens are the two oldest forges in the town. The smith besides shoeing animals, must repair all kinds of farm machinery, he must also band wheels, that is to put an iron band around
