- (continued from previous page)The death of a young wife was keenly felt by all but more especially by the parents - they, who had worked so hard to 'make the fortune' for their daughter and who were so happy that they had settled her in a 'nice place'. Under the usual marriage agreement half the dowry was paid on the signing of the agreement and the other half was paid after twelve-months. Death brought with it, then, not only the loss of the loved one but the loss of a life's earning. The marriage-money (the dowry) paid on the agreement day was irretrievably gone and if the husband's father wished the second portion should be paid. Much trouble was caused by these one-sided agreements which seemingly did not take the woman into account. The proceedings are now altered. In present-day marriage agreements the husband and wife are mentioned jointly in their rights.(continues on next page)
