- A young couple got married in the heart of Donoughmore and lived very happy and contented until the birth of the first born child after which the mother got some severe sickness of which she died suddenly. But unlike Lady Dufferine's poem to which the present story bear's strong analogy when the child and mother died together this child survived of the mother. After the funeral the grief stricken husband was very disconsolate. He got an old woman to nurse the child which he kept in a cot or cradle in the room where they slept. The woman slept in a bed in the opposite side and the cradle in the centre between the beds in a room opening from the kitchen.
