  2. In 1900, however, his long succession of victories in the English A.A.A. Championships was broken for he was defeated at Stamford Bridge, London, by "Dick" Sheldon - a splendidly built young fellow - of the New York Athletic Club. Horgan was in bad form and "fouled" his last throw which was far beyond Sheldon's best. This unexpected defeat roused him as nothing ever before did.
