Old houses were thatched long ago and some of them are still thatched.
The thatch consisted of heather and rushes. Long ago people had their beds in the kitchen. The bed was usually placed at the gable-wall. The fire was placed at the side-wall. The front of the chinmey was made of wattles and clay. People had no windows in their houses. The floor was made of mud. Half-doors were common in the district some people has half-doors yet in the district. Scrows and timber were used as fireing. Bog-deal and rushlights were the means which they had to give light.
