  1. Kilcummer, in the parish of Castletownroche, was famous for its great faction fights. At this place a fair was held yearly in July and here the fighting families congregated. At this time match making "for marriage was a simple matter. It wasn't fortunes land or stock that mattered but the strength of the factions.
    Jeremiah Curtin, of Ballymacmoy, informs me that months prior to the fair the blackthorn sticks were being prepared. Nothing was required to start a "row" but throw a "sop" at one of the rivals.
    The famous factions of this district were the Kirbys and the Curtins
    Faction fighting in this district has discontinued over eighty years.
