- We sow about half an acre of potatoes each year. The crop is good some years and other years not as good.
The ploughman prepares the ground. The ground is first ploughed and then harrowed then drills are made with a drill plough and then manure spread in the alleys. Sometimes the potatoes are sown in drills and other times in ridges.
Wooden ploughs were never in memory used in this district. For years past spades have been bought in a shop.
The potatoes are chosen and then cut into pieces called scealláinn. Each piece contains a seed-hole called "an eye".
Generally each man does his or their own planting - help is given only in extreme(continues on next page)- Collector
