- The townland in which I live is called Ballincranig in the parish of Ballygarvan. In the Irish language it is called Baile Garvan who the townland of Garvan who was a disciple of St Finbarr. Ballincrnig is a very extensive townland and is divided into five large farms.
In the beginning of the eighteenth century, one of these farms was owned by a rich lady named Bailey. This was a relative of Mr Bayley Rogers who was the founder of the Sheares Bank in the city of Cork. Among those whom he took into partnership was Mr Henry Sheares of Golden Bush near Innishannon. He was the father of John and Henry Sheares who suffered death on the scaffold in the dark days of 1798, for having loved Ireland not wisely, but too well.
