- Every Shrove Tuesday my mother makes pancakes. Long ago the people used to play games and have sport in their houses. Some of the men of the house used to go out with ropes, and bring in the neighbours. Every Shrove Tuesday my mother gives us nuts and pancakes.
She makes the pancakes with milk, and eggs, and flour. She makes about six dozen pancakes every Shrove Tuesday. Long ago the neighbours used to go to the neighbouring houses. The old people used to have dances and songs and music on Shrove Tuesday night. Long ago a certain man named Jackie the Lantern used to go around on Shrove Tuesday night. He used to have a lantern with him. Every person that he would catch, he would lead them astray. When the people would see the light, they would get dazzled from it.- Collector
