- Hallowe'en was a great feast long ago. Two nuts were put on the fire hob. One of the nuts would be christened a boy's name and the other a girl's name. If the two nuts hopped off together it was said the boy and girl would be married.

- Another interesting game was this; nuts were placed on a large sheet of tin over the fire. Then all the people crowded around the fire and snatched some nuts. It was said that the person who got the least number of nuts would die in poverty(continues on next page)
