- Most of the old houses were thatched long ago. There were only a few slated. There were no other kind roofs there except thatch and slate. The house was thatched with wheaten straw. The slate was got in quarries. In the small houses there used to be a bed in the kitchen long ago. It was called a folded bed and they could make a seat out of it afterwards. It was placed by the wall. The fire place was sometimes at the gable wall but often in the corners. The front of the chimney was made with mortar and stones.
I never heard of a house without a chimney.
