April 28th 1912 - The houses in olden times were not as up to-date as they are now. The majority of them were thatched with wheaten straw. The wheaten straw was called reed. It was thrashed with a flail. If properly put up this roof last for thirty years. The houses along the sea coast used to be thatched with burroch.(continues on next page)
