"Keening" is not remembered by the oldest person in this district. It seems to have fallen into disuse vary long before.
Mrs. Margaret Connolly, who gave me most of the material in this book. Told me that she was one of a party of "keening" women relatives, who were sent for to do the "keening" at the funeral of a relative of hers, who was buried at "Ahalanna" (As a Leanna) somewhere near Ballylongford (Co. Kerry) about 12 miles from here. That was over 80 years ago, when she was a young unmarried girl.
