    farewell, farewell my native lord,

"The vales of New Direen" written by John Downey, on the occassion of his elopement to America with a girl from that neighbourhood. Words given by John Liston.
    1
Farewell, farewell my native land, farewell for evermore
I now must leave you far behind and seek a distant shore
and very soon the ocean wide between us intervene
The dear old home that is mine no more in the vales of new Direen
    2
The South down seas I have crossed o'er and sought a foreign strand
and there I knew I'd see again (no more)my own my native land
For like John Mitchell in his cell there is nothing that tells me
of that dear old home that is mine no more in the vales of New Direen
    3
At home in dear old Ireland I would fain forever stay
But faith has destined for me to wander far away
from my native hills and valleys fair, where blooms the shamrock green
In that dear old home that is mine no more in the vales of New Direen.
