- The Use of Herbs and Plants. In olden times herbs and plants were often used for medicine by the old people. Some herbs and plants do great harm to land as they impoverish the soil. The commonest of these are dock-leaves, yellow-root, chicken-weed, ferns adn fellistrums. It is said that buchallans and thistles only grow in good land. Some herbs are used for wounds such as ; slan-lus, river-moss, dockleaves, camomile and
lus-ar-lin.Slan lus is to keep a wound ffrom opening and moss is used for stopping a flow of blood. Dockleaves were used to cure blisters sustained from nettles and camomile is used for a pain in the head. Lus-ar-lin is a blister for rheumatism and sciatica and is very severe.Told to John Broderick.By his grandmother,
Mrs. Mary Broderick (71).
