    taken down to Rathkeale and thrown into a place called the "Croppy Hole". Then they were burned with quicklime.
    Other true stories are told of the field alongside the old tree. At the time when the old tree was used as a gallows there was a group of soldiers in Newcastle West. When any of the soldiers would do anything wrong he would be brought to the field near the "Crooked Tree" and would be flogged with the "cat-of-nine-tails" there. The field at that time was owned by a man named Loch.
