- With us a quarter of an acre of potatoes is tilled each year. The potatoes are sown in ridges if the ground is being tilled for the first time. They are made by turning two scribes and then dig the furrow where the scribes were turned up and throw the earth on the ridge, between the two scribes. The ridges are about 2 1/2 feet wide. Three potatoes are put on the width of the ridge then they are covered with manure. They are banked the same as drills, but the earth is put up with a spade.
