- Long ago the girls made mats with an empty spool, some woolen thread and a hair pin. They drove four tacks into the top of the spool and put loops of thread on the tacks. They worked the thread over the tacks with a hair pin as if they were knitting. They kept on doing this until the knitted string was long enough to finish the mat. They then rolled it into the shape of a plate, sewed it at the back to keep it in position. Boys made cribs of twigs for catching birds.
