It was Sir Walter Raleigh who first brought the potato, and ever since it has been our staple food. About the years 1846-47 a great famine and pestilence visited Ireland, and it was the year that all the crops failed. Thousands and thousands of people died owing to starvation and disease.
By all accounts this district did not suffer much, and so this ends the story of the potato.
