    declared himself a Protestant, he would become the owner of his father's land.
    The penal laws were in full force for nearly a hundred years, but a lot of them were abolished in the year 1798.
    But even in the darkest of the penal days, the people heard mass on the hillsides, and in the back lanes.
    Kindly protestants often sheltered Catholics, bishops and priests, or gave them warning when the government agents and priest hunters were in the district.
    Protestants who were left as guardians of Catholic children acted in a very honourable way,
