- There are several forts around Kilmeedy and one of them is sitiated not far from our house in Carhumore, and it is locally called a moat. Long ago the people used to say there were fairies in them. Near the fort is a small dwelling house and the woman of the house used to gather firewood. It so happened as she was picking them in this moat she heard a voice say "stop". She stopped and looking round her could see no one, again she heard the voice more clearly and, being frightened, she ran and left them behind. About an hour later, she came out and not one of the sticks were in the bundle. That was the last time sticks were picked there.
