    were used. Dips were made like rush lights as far as the dipping went, but for wick was a plaited piece of cotton. This candle required spluttering. Rush lights were held in stands of iron and a sort of clip or fingers held the light firmly up. The light of both candles was poor compared with our modern candles of today.
