- (continued from previous page)The Croker of Ballinagarde, mentioned overleaf was of the family who acquired Croom Castle and its estate from the Duke of Richmond, natural son of James II, in 1721. Miss Finnerty N. T. says: My father used often speak of how beautiful Ballinagarde was. One of them (the Crokers) had great artistic tastes and peopled the walks and drives with splendid and costly statuary, brought from Italy and other countries. When that Croker died, his successor had neither the wealth nor the taste necessary to keep up the splendor of his predecessor, and so the statues fell and became covered with leaves or were broken and neglected. And Mr. O Connell adds.
"In the end the Crokers had no money but they had the royalty (that is the nobility) The O Gradys of Kilballyowen had the money but not the royalty. The money bought the blood (that is an O Grady lady brought new wealth as a wife to a Croker) and the blood was kept up by the money. I believe there isnt a Croker nor an O Grady one of these days."
And further: We are all buried in Rochestown. The Crokers have a vault there. One of them was a general. When he died he was buried there and every day his dinner would be brought down to the vault and also a glass of punch. There was (were) a silver knife fork and spoon for him.
