- The houses long ago were very different from the houses nowadays. The walls were made of mud and wood. The floors were made of mud also, and the roofs were made of thatch. the people used to keep a bed in the Kitchen near the fireplace called a Settle.
The fireplaces were made of mud, and they used to put a flat stone behind the fire. Long ago there were no chimneys in the houses, only a hole in the roof, and often there was no hole atall, and the smoke used to go out the doors and windows.
They had no glass in windows only sercen wire, and iron bars outside the windows for safety. The people used to put half-doors outside the big doors. It was chiefly wood and turf they used for firing.
