The handsome maids and stalwart men
Of glorious Gleann - na - gCreabhar
'Twould fill their hearts with grievous pangs
    To leave their shady bower
    But Saxons rule and poverty
Have caused them far to roam
    Far away across the sea
    From their loved island home.
Oh! may the notes of freedom shine
When peace and prosperity will follow on in a while
We'll have our trade and industries as we had before
Those sneering tyrants took possession of our shore.
