    The finder of the shield drove the top of a sickle through it accidentally in two places, at the time of its discovery.
    Not knowing its real value he took it home and used it as a cover of a pot for boiling pigs' food.
    Then he sold it to Mr. Lenihan, the Limerick Historian for 30s/-. Mr. Lenihan re-sold it to the Royal Irish Academy for £60.
